50% Through the Challenge, Still 100% Car-Free

Last week was much more ordinary for us than the first week of the Challenge.  Except for one bus trip across town, we've walked everywhere we needed to go.  So far, our total travel in June comes to 72 miles by transit, 15 miles by bike, and 38 miles on foot, for a total of 125 miles.  At this rate, we are not only going to travel far fewer miles by car, but also fewer miles by any means than the average Bay Area resident.

For us, that emphasizes the importance of compact, mixed-use development in encouraging alternative transportation.  When the nearest grocery store is only five blocks away, it's a lot easier to walk or bike there than if it were miles away.  Again, we are glad to be able to live so close to work, shops and restaurants.

We'll be racking up some more miles later this month, though, including a trip to the San Francisco Opera, and picking up a visitor at the SF airport.  So stay tuned for photos of us riding AC Transit in dress clothes and/or hauling luggage.
