Craptacular: the story of LA transit
Submitted by kgronfield on Tue, 06/02/2009 - 23:11.
Day two was not stellar. If I write this whole entry without profanity, I don't think that I will capture the real mood I am in about the public transit in Los Angeles.
I started out the day well. Went to coffee, the library, the grocery store and a friend's house all on my bike.
Then the big challenge of the day: Going to my friend Anne's house for dinner and then going to see our friends in a band. Even during rush hour the bus between our houses only run every 30-40 minutes! And the bus stops just after 8 pm. So what if people work at night? Or go out somewhere?
I was going to have my friend drop me off at a different bus in Hollywood that would bring me pretty close to home, but it only comes once an hour!!! Anne drove me home and even with the carpool in consideration, I put on 11 miles today.
Yesterday I was thinking that I could cut down my mileage even further, but today I feel like 300 is going to be a bigger challenge than I thought.
LA transit sucks ass, but I keep hoping that it will tie up nicely as stories are supposed to do in Hollywood. I'll start out hopeful, meet adversity and maybe a wise-old role model lady on the bus who will teach me about life and how to navigate LA transit. We'll both grow and be better people.
Or maybe I will have to rise up and be a hero I never knew I could be for all the car-less people in LA. and I will find the words to express the frustration of thousands in front of a crowd that will at first be skeptical but then realize that history is being made and one guy will start clapping slowly, and then the crowd will join in until we band together for FREEDOM!
Maybe someone will place a bomb on the bus that blows up if the bus goes less than 88 miles per hour! and I will have to drive the bus through the streets of los angeles at breakneck speeds and find my true love...
wait... maybe it won't have a hollywood ending. Maybe I will find a way to find some balance where I cut down on my miles and start advocating for better public transit. I guess it isn't very glamorous, but maybe it can help me and my friends open our eyes a bit.
Plus, my true love is sitting on the couch in the other room already. He spent over an hour printing out transit maps for me today. That's pretty awesome

Um, this posting is awesome. I'd say 11 miles is pretty good for a day in LA. Your reference to "Speed" got me thinking about movies with public transportation in them... "Last Stop Wonderland" (about the Boston T)...
PS I think I'm noticing a theme to your postings? :)
