About the Invest in Transit Campaign

Billions of designated transit dollars have been redirected for other uses over the past decade. Public transportation has been a piggy bank for the state’s budget woes and we’re feeling firsthand what happens when we bleed our transit agencies dry: service cuts, fare increases, and broken down buses and trains.

In response, TransForm has launched a bold new campaign called Invest in Transit. This campaign will build a powerful statewide movement of transit riders, workers, health advocates, environmental groups, business leaders, and others to demand that our leaders invest in transit.

As we build our movement, we’ll focus on two goals:

  • Protecting state funding for public transportation this year from being taken for other uses, plus expanding funding in future years to ensure transit runs safely and sufficiently meets the needs of a rapidly growing population.
  • Giving local and regional entities more authority to establish and manage their own funding sources for public transportation. State funding isn’t going to be enough to maintain our current system, much less build the system we need for the future.  If cities and regions want to ask voters to approve new fees to fund public transportation, they should have that freedom so they can invest in transit.

TransForm has shown what the power of bringing together diverse stakeholders around a common goal can do.  Our efforts have won billions of dollars for public transportation, smart growth, affordable housing, and bicycle/pedestrian safety in the Bay Area.  Now, we want to bring this kind of success at the state level.

In just the past few weeks, we’ve already made incredible progress with the Invest in Transit campaign. Labor, health, and housing groups have signed on in support of the campaign. So has the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, founded by David Packard and representing more than 300 companies, has already signed on in support of the campaign. And we’re just getting started!

This isn’t going to be easy and it won’t happen overnight. You know how broken California’s budget is. Plus, we face the well-established special interests in Sacramento who act like it’s still 1950 when it comes to transportation spending and can’t seem to “think outside the car.”

But we can get there with your helpIf we have the resources to fully launch this campaign, we can travel to meet with potential partners, bring people to Sacramento for lobby days, and meet regularly with the powers-that-be in the Capitol. We communicate our issues more effectively than ever, organize like never before throughout the state, and be ready for legal action if needed.

With your support, we can fix up and maintain our current bus, train, and ferry service.  And we can start building the world-class public transportation system California needs so that everyone – commuters, families, students, seniors, and people with disabilities – can have real options in how they get around.
