TransForm's Annual Car-Free Challenge
The Car-Free Challenge asks how low you can go in terms of mileage – and challenges you to set a personal mileage goal for a seven-day period (or more) during the month of June. Participants in the Car-Free Challenge share their stories of taking public transportation, walking, and bicycling - plus compete for great prizes.
The 2009 Car-Free Challenge (download fact sheet), which ended June 30, was a huge success. The nearly 200 participants drove an average of under 125 miles in June (the average American driver goes more than 1,000 miles in a month)! Tens of thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide were kept out of the atmosphere. And the stories from Challengers are incredible!
The goal of the Car-Free Challenge is to:
- Send a message to our leaders that a critical mass of people want to drive less and live more - which is why we need better options for walking, biking, and taking public transportation!
- Inspire a huge number of people to drive less and live more.
- Raise awareness of and funds for TransForm's critical work fighting for world-class public transportation and walkable communities in the Bay Area and beyond.
A big thanks to our 2009 sponsors, especially:
