Annual Bike Festival Brings Fun and Bike Education to Alameda

The City of Alameda celebrates biking with an Annual Bike Festival. The festival, which happened on April 27 this year, focuses on fun and educational activities for kids, resources for everyone who wants to ride a bike, and bringing the community together.

This year, Transform coordinated the event at Love Elementary School. The Alameda Bike Festival was made possible by sponsorship, contributions, and support from the Alameda Unified School District, the City of Alameda, the Kiwanis Club of Alameda, the Elks Club of Alameda, Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools, Alameda elementary school PTAs, the Alameda PTA Council, and the Alameda Education Fund. We had help from 40 volunteers from Alameda middle and high schools to make the day a success.

Bike rodeos and more

This year’s festival helped more people get on their bikes. BikeMobile, a mobile repair van, fixed 60 bikes at the event. One of the biggest barriers to riding is not knowing how or not being able to get a bike into working order, so services like BikeMobile are vital to helping people get and stay on the road. The Kiwanis Club also did a helmet fitting and gave away more than 100 helmets.

Bike East Bay held a family cycling workshop with 30 participants, and Alameda Bicycle’s Kids Learn to Ride class showed 80 kids good riding skills. Cycles of Change held a bike rodeo for kids and East Street Cycling hosted an Urban Cycling 101 workshop.

Attendees enjoyed delicious food from Los Kuyas and Curveball Sliders. It was a great day and a lovely demonstration of Alameda’s support for sustainable transportation and the joy of riding a bike.
