Mobility Hubs in Affordable Housing
When you give people clean transportation options, they save money, have more mobility choices, and reduce their carbon footprints.
When you give people clean transportation options, they save money, have more mobility choices, and reduce their carbon footprints.
While mobility hubs’ services like bike-share, carshare, scooter share, and electric car charging are available in many locations throughout the Bay Area, they don’t serve all neighborhoods. The Mobility Hubs at Affordable Housing pilot seeks to advance access to mobility hubs’ services. We believe true mobility is about making sure services and infrastructure are available in often-forgotten neighborhoods — ones where the majority of neighbors are working-class families and people of color.
“As a single mother and college student not many know the struggle it is commuting to and from doctors appointments, college classes, daily errands, and tasks unless you actually live through it. These available discounted transit services have allowed me to continue to live my life without the added stress of not having reliable transportation.”
—Jennifer Delgado, Betty Ann Gardens, San Jose
Our current Mobility Hubs pilot, funded by the California Air Resources Board, is in three Bay Area neighborhoods.
Betty Ann Gardens | San Jose |
Lion Creek Crossings | Oakland |
Nystrom Neighborhood | Richmond |
Mobility hubs are places in a community that bring together public transit, bike share, car share, and other ways for people to get where they want to go. They are meant to be easy, affordable, and accessible to many people.
Transform conducted a needs assessment at each site for this pilot, so we could tailor the offerings to the needs of residents.
We have provided shared bikes, bike storage, repair clinics, and e-bikes to help residents adopt active transportation.
Monthly Lyft credits help residents get to doctor’s appointments, take children to school, and bring home groceries.
Our pilot connects residents to buses and trains with discounted passes and up-to-the-minute departure information.
We provided electric car sharing at Betty Ann Gardens, giving residents a low-cost, low-carbon alternative to private car ownerships.
Our pilot program has provided Lyft rides, EV sharing, bike sharing, and improved transit access and affordability at three sites in the Bay Area. The pilot ends in 2024, but we hope to expand the model and extend it to more sites in the future.
