Safe Routes to Schools Planning Another Big Year

As students go back to school, the Safe Routes team at Transform is scheduling another year of fun events at the 300+ participating schools in Alameda County. Working with the Alameda County Transportation Commission, school staff, Youth Task Force, and parent champions, we’re looking forward to an exciting year of walking, rolling, and shared rides. Here’s what’s on our calendar.

September

Every month, Safe Routes has a theme, and in September we’ll be celebrating Transit Month.

  • Sign up for a Youth Clipper Card to access BART, AC Transit, and other local transit agencies in the Bay Area!
  • Check out the BARTable website to find local places to explore on BART near you!
  • Attend a Transit Month event near you! Stay tuned to BART’s and AC Transit’s websites for more.

Monthly Walk and Roll Challenge:

  • Go on some fun trips and use two types of public transportation during the month of September!
  • Take a photo of your trip and tag the SR2S Program on Facebook (@saferoutestoschool) or Twitter/X (@AlamedaCoSR2S), and your photo just might make a special appearance on our social media page!

October

Wednesday, October 7, is International Walk & Roll to School Day. Last year, more than twice as many students walked, rolled, took transit, or carpooled to school as got dropped off alone. We hope to do even better this year!

November

Ruby Bridges Day

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is November 14. On that day, students walk to school in honor of Ruby Bridges, who integrated her school in New Orleans in 1960. The Safe Routes theme is inclusion, and students are encouraged to learn about Ruby Bridges and wear purple on November 14.

December

As the days grow shorter, the theme of Safe Routes is Stay Bright.

  • Double-check your bike or scooter to make sure you have lights attached to help you see when it’s dark.
  • Decorate your helmet, bike, or backpack with reflective stickers or tape.

Share your reflective and brightly colored outfit or how you decorate your helmet or bike with us to stay visible on social media! Alameda CTC Safe Routes to Schools Facebook; Alameda CTC Safe Routes to Schools X/Twitter.

January

Registration opens for one of the most hotly contested events of the year: the Golden Sneaker Contest!

February

High school students participate in Reboot Your Commute, learning new ways to get to school.

March

Elementary and middle school classrooms compete to see who can log the most days of walking, rolling, and sharing rides to school. The winner gets the Golden Sneaker, and the winning school gets the Platinum Sneaker.

April

Time to tune up that bike and get ready for the final event of the year…

May

Bike to School Day will be on May 13, 2027, the same day as Bike to Wherever Day. Hundreds of students of all ages joined the joyous two-wheeled celebration, and we’re looking forward to an even bigger turnout next year.

We can’t wait to meet new students, work with new parent champions, and support Alameda County students in finding more sustainable, healthy, and fun ways to get to school.
